Flamenco is a Spanish genre, which developed especially in Andalusia. For this reason, and as is evident, all the lyrics of the different flamenco “palos” (different varieties of flamenco singing) are in the language of our country. But, what if we perform flamenco lyrics in English? In this way, we work on the meter and rhyme of some flamenco “palos”, we can introduce students to songwriting in a foreign language, and also attract an audience from other countries to one of the most characteristic musical genres of our culture.

To this end, José Alberto Amador (music teacher at the school) proposed the activity «Antoñico at the English Class», a spin-off of his videogame «Villa Flamenco». In this title, the main character, Antoñico, has his English homework pending after saving Villa Flamenco from the evil Bad Funny. When he returns to class, he discovers that he has not handed in several exercises related to flamenco, specifically, letters that talk about the heritage of Alcalá la Real.

In this adventure, the students had to find out which were the hidden words in the verses, and then perform them in unison. Oral and written expression at the service of music and flamenco. Olé!
